Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. Luke 9:35-36
Luke’s view of the transfiguration of Jesus is quite unique. Compared with the other two Synoptic Gospels Luke provides the greatest detail into this incredible event. However one cannot simply read the event of the transfiguration apart from the context of the narrative preceding it. Earlier, Jesus alone with his disciples asked them an important question. v.18 And it happened that while he was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?” We all know their answers, maybe John the Baptist, maybe Elijah, or maybe one of the prophets of old.
In verse 20 Jesus asks them a more pointed question, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter who always was quick with an answer, ready to speak on behalf of the disciples replies, “The Christ of God.” But did he really understand what he had just said? Did he truly understand the meaning of the term Christ?
Peter thought he knew what the Messiah was all about, but his focus was blurred. It is the same for us today. Sometimes the world around us screams so loudly about what Christianity is supposed to be that we replace truth with tradition or something much worse, all the while believing we are looking at the real deal. Jesus begins to focus the disciples spiritual eyes on Truth in vv. 22-27 telling them that first, Christ must suffer, die and be raised from the dead. Second, that those who will follow him will suffer as well.
However, it took something more for the disciples … an event of Biblical proportions. Taken up on a mountain with Jesus; Peter, John, and James were witnesses to an incredible glimpse of glory, and it left them literally speechless. Half asleep, yet seeing clearly enough to identify two men they have never seen before—Moses, and Elijah—Jesus begins to correct their vision. In the midst of Peter’s dialogue concerning the building of earthly tents for glorified beings, God the Father arrives in a cloud obscuring everything. And when they are absolutely alone, blinded from the world, prophets of old removed … they hear the voice of God, and see clearly.
“This is My Son, the Chosen One; Listen to Him!” v. 35
When the cloud lifts, there is no Elijah. There is no great prophet of old. Just a voice clearly ringing in their ears, and Jesus the Christ, alone.
Sometimes our spiritual vision gets out of focus, and we just like the disciples need a mountain top experience to remind us what serving Jesus is really all about. Remember, the mountain isn’t where life is lived. It is in valleys, where most often we will encounter suffering and pain for the cause of Christ.
How is your vision?
Study to know Him,

I miss Him oftentimes because of all my wrong ideas about Him. Thanks for the reminder of why I do what I do and how prone I am to mess it all up.
Studying to know Him,
Paul
Thanks for reading Paul, and thanks for the comment. I agree with you 100%. I believe I have a lot of Peter in me often times. And in this world today, I can loose my focus on who Jesus the Christ, really is, and what we are really to be about as followers of Him.
Maybe that is why my life verse has always been, Hebrews 12:2 “Fix your eyes on Jesus the author and perfecter of your faith …
Blessings to you, and thanks for preaching the Gospel of Christ, every week, even when it isn’t always easy to do so. I thank God for our friendship.
Our focus truly is blurred. Isn’t it great when we experience the moments when we see Christ more clearly than normal? This happens when we are thoroughly confessed and repentent. Sin is such a blinder for us. That’s why we long for the Day of his return. Then, our vision will never be blurred again! Let’s pray for his promised return to be soon!
Yes, Edward, sin is a blinder. Thank you for your comment, and for clarifying the point. I guess that is why God has given us the Holy Spirit and fellowship with other believers. So that there can be those in our lives who will speak correction and direction into us when we stray.
Until he returns, may we work to be salt and light in this world.
Blessings,
Some of my most blinding glimpses of the holiness of God are not when I am confessed and repentant, but rather when I am warring against sin. I recognize sin in my life with great clarity when confronted and convicted by the Holy Spirit, and brought to repentace because of His holiness. I love the truth of this in Isaiah’s life when he came face to face with the glory of God.
Thanks for posting, Alan.
I believe the three disciples on the mountain had an experience much like you just described. They were walking with Jesus, and they had just confessed that he was the Christ. And yet when one comes face to face with God even in the form of a cloud, it should leave us speechless.
Thanks Garrett for your efforts to be holy before God, and your constant witness of his faithfulness.
From Alan, “But did he really understand what he had just said?”
Let’s be fully confident that Peter did understand, because it was revealed to him by God.
Matthew 16
15: He (Jesus) said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
16: Simon Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”
17: And Jesus answered him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven.
18: And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the powers of death shall not prevail against it.
19: I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
who is the artist of the transfiguration painting?
I, too, would like to know the artist of this painting or picture of the Transfiguration.
“Thank You.”

Know the truth
I agree Paden. That we should be like the Berean’s who searched the scriptures. It is one thing to know about Jesus Christ, it is something all together different when we choose to put our faith and our trust solely in Him.
I Agree! Jesus is Christ ! is Living son of God!
His Promised one of god. Who redeem the whole wold !
Matthew 16:15= He (Jesus) said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”
so Jesus asked you personally each of one “who do you say that i am ?”
